Bibury and Arlington Row

Bibury is the Cotswold village on the inside of some British passports, and the stop most day-trippers remember. Here is how to see it well in the 40 minutes a tour gives you.

William Morris called Bibury "the most beautiful village in England", and in 2025 Forbes went further and named it the most beautiful village in the world. The result is a small riverside village of a few hundred people that now receives tens of thousands of visitors on a busy summer weekend.

It is still lovely. It just rewards a little planning.

The quick answer

Bibury is a small village on the River Coln, and its star is Arlington Row, a terrace built in 1380 as a monastic wool store and turned into weavers' cottages in the 17th century. It is owned by the National Trust and the cottages are private homes. The Complete Cotswolds tour stops for 40 minutes; go straight to Arlington Row, then walk back along the river.

Where is Bibury, and why is it famous?

Bibury is in Gloucestershire, near Cirencester, and it is famous for Arlington Row and for William Morris's line about it being the most beautiful village in England.

The River Coln, a Thames tributary, runs clear through the centre beside the road. Arlington Row's image appears on the inside cover of some British passports, which helped make it one of the most photographed places in the Cotswolds.

What is Arlington Row?

A terrace of stone cottages built in 1380 as a monastic wool store, converted in the 17th century into homes for weavers who made cloth for nearby Arlington Mill.

The row is looked after by the National Trust and the cottages are lived in, so you can walk the public path in front of them but not go inside. Keep off doorsteps and gardens, keep voices down, and do not block the lane for residents.

What else is there to see in Bibury?

The River Coln and its trout, Bibury Trout Farm (founded in 1902), and the water meadow opposite Arlington Row.

In 40 minutes most people walk the loop: along the river past the trout, over to Arlington Row, up the lane behind it and back. If you have longer, the trout farm is a gentle add-on, especially with children.

Why is Bibury so crowded, and what has changed?

Social media and the Forbes title sent visitor numbers soaring, and Gloucestershire County Council has responded by removing coach parking from the village centre.

The council trialled closing the coach bays in May 2025, reported around 20,000 visitors on a single peak summer weekend, and in March 2026 approved a GBP 175,000 scheme with permanent coach restrictions, drop-off points, pay-and-display parking and wider footways. Smaller vehicles are encouraged, which suits minibus tours. Expect the drop-off point to be a short walk from Arlington Row.

When is the best time to photograph Arlington Row?

Early morning or early evening on a weekday, which a day tour cannot give you; on a tour, head there first.

Tour groups arrive in waves from late morning. Walk straight to the row when you step off, take your photos, then enjoy the river. The classic view is from the water meadow path across the stream.

Can you get to Bibury without a car or tour?

Yes, but slowly: the 855 bus links Bourton-on-the-Water, Bibury and Cirencester, roughly hourly Monday to Saturday, and not on Sundays.

Combining it with a train from London takes most of a day. See the Cotswolds by train for routes.

Is Bibury worth visiting?

Yes: even with the crowds, Arlington Row and the river are among the loveliest sights in England.

Go with realistic expectations: you will share it. Compare it with the other stops in the best Cotswolds villages.
